About My Family

My name is Luke Callender. I studied music at the University of North Texas and later graduated from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in December of 2018. During this time I served as chaplain at a county jail in Texas for nearly eight years. This ministry training has proved to be more valuable that I can express. The Lord is perfectly wise in His providential timing!

My wife, Dominee, our three sons, Augustus, Rufus and Virgil, and I moved to New Bedford, Mass., in April of 2019. The Lord moved us from Texas, where Dominee and I had spent our entire lives up to that point, to labor alongside a small group of Christians to see a faithful, gospel-proclaiming, local church established in the city.

About My Church Plant

New England is the new American missional frontier. New Bedford, Mass., is a city of approximately 130,000 people (with the surrounding area comprised of another 120,000 people) situated about an hour south of Boston and 45 minutes east of Providence, R.I. Because New Bedford has the unique challenges of being in a post-Christian culture and an urban context, establishing a church there will be a work of perseverance and steadfastness.

We are preparing to launch Sunday morning services on Easter of 2020.

NAMB Church Planting

Demonstrated Christian character is essential for missionaries and chaplains to gain credibility and build community. A missionary is a person who, in response to God's call and gifting, leaves his or her comfort zone and crosses cultural, geographic or other barriers to proclaim the gospel and live out a Christian witness in obedience to the Great Commission. The North American Mission Board supports missionaries serving across the United States, Canada and their territories. Churches are the missionary incubators and sending centers for missionaries through the Southern Baptist Convention. Missionaries serve in a variety of settings and face tremendous challenges. But the rewards are tremendous and life-changing. Missionaries have the privilege to represent their church and their Father in sharing the gospel as the primary focus of their activity. If you are interested in pursuing next steps as a potential missionary or chaplain from your church, explore the possibilities at namb.net/send-me.

Pray

Only by a movement of the Spirit of God will we see new life in a dark place. Please pray that the name of the Lord would be magnified and exalted, that disciples would be made and that the light of Christ would shine brightly in a dark place. Would you put our family’s name; the church plant, Grace Harbor Church New Bedford; and the people of New England on your prayer lists to bring before the Lord regularly?

Participate

Would you consider partnering with us financially? We are not going to a church with an established budget and staff. We're planting a church in a largely barren land. The Lord is the provider of our every need; He is worthy of our trust and adoration. We’re hoping in and relying upon Him completely to supply us as we go. Will you commit to pray and consider investing in the kingdom by partnering with us through monthly financial support?
Would you consider joining us in New England? Would the Lord have you embody the light of Christ in a dark place, a place that has almost completely forgotten the sound of praise being lifted up to the Most High God?
